Oakland, California

Oakland is the largest city and the county seat of Alameda County, California. A major West Coast port, Oakland is the largest city in the East Bay region of the San Francisco Bay Area, the third largest city overall in the Bay Area and the eighth most populated city in California.

Named for the large oak forest that originally covered the area, tucked between the San Francisco Bay and the green, rolling hills of the East Bay, Oakland is home to towering redwood trees, great places to live and an impressive number of acclaimed restaurants and coffee shops.

The San Francisco Board of Supervisors has approved a new neighborhood development of 8,000 residences and over 300 acres of parks and open space to be built on both Yerba Buena Island and Treasure Island. Treasure Island, connected to Yerba Buena by a single causeway, is an artificial piece of land constructed in 1939 to house the Golden Gate International Exposition, then used as a Navy base until 1997.

Designed by Timothy Pfleger in 1931, the landmark features a resplendent Art Deco auditorium with bas-relief sculptural panels, a grand ceiling, and a 1931 Wurlitzer organ. The Paramount Theatre is a 3,040-seat Art Deco concert hall located in Downtown Oakland. When it was built in 1931, it was the largest multi-purpose theater on the West Coast, seating 3,476. Today, the Paramount is the home of the Oakland East Bay Symphony and the Oakland Ballet.
